Why Follow Me on Twitter? Some Thoughts

HeadoneI’ve spent a lot of time and words telling people why I do, and do not follow others on Twitter, add them as Facebook friends, link to them on Linked In, etc. Most of the “numbers games” are so pointless that rather than being neutral influences on productivity, they eat into the negative numbers. So… a couple of hints up front. DON’T bother to follow me if you are hoping to add me to your MLM, affiliate marketing program, or just want me to follow you back so you can tell people you got 10k followers in thirty minutes or whatever. Come around if you want to talk.

Here, then, are ten reasons that I think people might find it worthwhile to follow me – or at least ten ways I try to be worth the trouble.

1)  I will talk with anyone about anything. If someone asks me a question, or comments on something I’ve said – I do my best to engage.

2)  While I will talk about my books, stories, and screenplays, I don’t primarily plug myself. I hope that those following me will be interested enough to want to check out my work, but I don’t want to be a schill.

3)  I am an IT Director with over twenty years IT experience, and if I can possibly help with something, I will. Where can you get THAT for free?

4)This is, or is not a plus, but IS a fact. I have made over 350 Lolcats/dogs/celebrities – and I share them regularly. If you like these, you’ll get new ones from me regularly.

5) I go out of my way to help people with Twitter, and to point out scams, tricks, tips, etc. I have even written twitter guides you can download. In fact, I write a LOT about Twitter, more than you’ll find in most e-books and courses that people charge money for. Here’s a link to all the posts here about Twitter: HANDY LINK

6) I know a lot of very cool people on Twitter, and I’m happy to suggest them to you, and you to them, if we connect.  It’s what Twitter is all about.

7) If you follow me, I will go to your profile.  I will probably follow the link to your blog / home page unless it’s a shrunken url that could be pointing almost anywhere.  I’ll take an actual interest and in most cases, if you are a real person actively hoping to connect with others, I’ll follow back.

8)  If you are a reader, you will find posts to free stories, poetry, and a currently constant string of scenes from my screenplay in progress.  Right now it’s “Redneck Dragon” that I’m serializing.  My first Twitter-born and shared screenplay, “Killer Green,” has been optioned and is moving forward toward production.

9) If you like books, you’ll find deals and information on ordering them – from time to time – in my tweets and in my blog.  I sometimes hold contests and give books away.  I offer special discounts to people who hear about my books on twitter…you can save money AND be entertained.  How cool is that?

10)  Life is too short not to bring the funny.  I’m not always funny, but sometimes I’m hilarious AND I know funny.  When I see it, I share it.  I retweet funny and relevant posts.  I put people in contact with those who can help with questions and problems, and I will add my followers to the recipients of your important tweets when I catch them.
