Upgrade to Wordpress 2.8 Fairly smooth

So, I was pretty excited that they released Wordpress 2.8 (Yeah, I’m a geek, things like that do it for me). There are several new features that interested me, like being able to browse themes and install them automatically the way you could install plugins in 2.7 – better management of your screen – and a much better and more intuitive interface for widgets.

The one feature I heard I’d get that seems not to be here is the multiple user merger. They said that WPMU would merge in with Wordpress 2.8, but I see no sign that it’s true. This upsets me because the upgrade wiped out my MU site at macabreink.com (there was only one blog there that I set up for old Navy buddies – I’ll fix it). Still, it’s a feature I’d hoped to get, because it would allow my different works, series, and interests to have sub-sites with their own look and feel…maybe soon?

The one glitch I had was that after the successful upgrade, I still had a little warning at the top of the dashboard that said the upgrade was not completed…even though it very obviously was. A quick Google search told me to delete the .maintenance file from the site, and the warning went away. All appears to be well…we shall see.

My assessment of the new version so far is two thumbs way up – but be patient when you upgrade – it can take a while, and it might seem as if the install has died. Be patient.
