Mr. Black came back to his apartment by a circuitous route.  He avoided the street, and he entered by the maintenance stairs in back.  Mrs. Brown, who always watched Black’s apartment from her window across the street, hoping to time her walk to the park so they would meet, saw nothing.  Later, when Black exited through the front door, Mrs. Brown joined him, and they talked and walked as Whitey the Poodle pranced around their feet.  Mr. Brown glanced out his window and saw the Mrs. with Black.  Mr. Brown turned green, but pulled himself from view.

Down the street and over five blocks, Violet knocked timidly on Red’s door, but Red didn’t answer.  Red, you see, was dead.  In about an hour his blood, also red, would announce this by pooling out beneath the door into the hall.  Violet was terribly shy, and when Red didn’t answer, she assumed he was out – or that he didn’t want to see her again – which made her Blue.

While Mrs. Brown blushed and talked, swung her hips and walked, Mr. Black blanked her out with a plastic smile and thought of the picture he carried in his wallet.  In that picture, Violet smiled at him.  At a camera, at least.  When Black was near her, she always smiled at Red, which made Black Blue.  Black had dropped in and given Red more red than he’d bargained for.  With the ink spilled out, he was still Red, now dead.

Mr. Brown slipped out and followed Black .  Mrs. Brown gave up and turned away, following Whitey the dog into an empty park with her lonely heart.  Black walked back to the building where he’d left Red, dead, and found Violet just leaving.  She smiled at him, and his heart nearly stopped.  They spoke, she smiled again.  He asked after dinner, and she  smiled a third time – he was charmed.  Violet blushed and left Black alone.

Brown slipped from the shadows, still green, and stabbed Black in the back.  Black bled red, soon dead.  Red remained red, though the ink was spilled, and also spilled, Black remained black, though dead.   Brown returned to his apartment by a circuitous route, entering by the maintenance stairs in back.

In the park, Violet told Mrs. Brown of her date with a fourth smile – one too many.  She failed to notice when Mrs. Brown turned green.  Purple prose is never clean…
