(Not sure how I ended up with TWO for frown, but here…)
#12 ![]()
They hauled the shooter off in handcuffs, but it didn’t stop him from screaming. He didn’t seem upset that he’d been arrested, only that they wouldn’t listen to him. He missed his second target, and he thought they should finish the job. They tried to read him his rights, but he actually head-butted the officer in charge and screamed at him to listen.
He said the man was an alien.
They said he had the right to remain silent.
He said they were letting the other one get away.
They said he had the right to an attorney.
He told them that it was obviously an alien he’s shot, that it took exactly 12 facial muscles to smile, and only 11 to frown. The man he shot had only eleven such muscles.
They told him an attorney could be appointed to him if he couldn’t afford one.
He said he was a doctor. He said he had X-rays and charts. He said they were planning to take over, and that if the other target wasn’t eliminated, they were doomed. He told them to watch for someone who only frowns.
The officer was very calm…and stern. He fixed the man with an unwavering expressionless gaze. The man stopped screaming and stared.
“Frown.” he said.
The officer remained unmoved.
“Smile.” he said.
The officer stared and pressed the shooter down into the back seat of his cruiser.
The man’s terrified face pressed to the glass as the squad car pulled away from the curb. A man standing nearby leaned and picked up a paper the shooter had dropped.
“Dr. Kent Allard, M.D.”
The man smiled, but the edges of his lips curled and curled until they seemed to split his head in two parts.
