Passing on the Trek – Wrath of Kahn on Blu-Ray

prosperWe just cracked open the three-pack of Blu-ray editions of Star Trek movies I got for Father’s Day. It starts with “The Wrath of Kahn,” and of all those in the house, the most excited to watch the movie was my daughter Katie, who’s about 5 1/2 years old. She’s watched a few episodes of the various TV incarnations, and she’s watched some Stargate Atlantis with us…we all settled in and pushed Play.

I have to say, Blu-Ray was very very good to this film. The colors were bright, the remastering is superb, and as I recalled, the movie is very good. From the moment a young and svelte Kirstie Alley glanced up from failing the no-win scenario and Kirk walked into the glowing light until the moment Spock dug into the warp core and saved them all…it was wonderful.

The most touching part, though, was near the end. When Spock “died,” and Kirk was in tears, Katie crawled up into my lap. We watched the funeral and as Spock shot into space and onto the surface of the newly created planet…Katie said, “my eyes are watering.”

We rocked in the big chair as the movie ran through to the credits, and then I whispered to her that it was okay…tomorrow we’d watch the movie where Spock comes back. She’s okay with that, but she was still very sad. Trish remembered at that point she had to wait YEARS to find out Spock wasn’t dead…lucky for Katie, I have the next two movies.

I return you to your weekends. Live Long and Prosper.
