Novel Season is Open

Novel season is open November the first
And we roll out ideas, all the best and the worst
Outlines and notes for each fictional scene
And for all of the words that will fall in between
We blog and we tweet and we raise a fine ruckus
To praise all of the plots and ideas that have struck us
Our families and friends shake their heads in dismay,
If they know what is best, they step out of the way,
As the word-o-count meters keep track of our work,
And the doubt and depression seek places to lurk,
We strap on our armor and pound on our keys,
Until thousands of novels are brought to their knees
Why do we do it? What is it all for?
Why do we keep writing?  Why do we keep score?
What do we win?  What’s the optimal prize?
Will we be more attractive?  More witty?  More wise?
No, our novels are mountains we conquer and dare
Not for glory, just JPEGS that say we were there.
So rally your dexterous fingers and toes
And type through your weariness, problems and woes,
So when all’s said and done, if somebody should look,
They will say, hey, old so and so just wrote a book!
