This book is a part of a trilogy, the collaborative effort of authors Janet Berliner, and George Guthridge, the former an ex-President of the Horror Writer’s Association, the latter a teacher with unique methods and an astounding track record of results.
CHILD OF LIGHT is a novel of Germany on the cusp of Hell. It is the story of Solomon and Eric, two boys – one Jewish, and one not – their families, and how their world shifted with the coming of Chancellor Adolph Hitler.
Their fathers are partners in a tobacco shop. Eric’s father is an angry, belligerent man with anti-semitic roots he can’t seem to shake. Solomon’s father thinks of his family’s future, and is dedicated to his children’s education and upward social mobility.
Miriam is the girl both boys come to love – a singer and dancer, daughter of high-society. Solomon’s father sees her as part of his plan to find better things for his son Solomon. Eric’s father sees her as a Jewish temptress. The fiery relationship between the two families, and the growing tension of the government in turmoil is the backdrop. The story is that of the boys – one with the visions of a prophet, and the other with an in-bred psychic connection to the dogs he trans, first for himself – and then for The Fuhrer.
Though there are elements of the fantastic blended into the story, this is not a genre work. This is the beginning of an epic story of pain, suffering, the fight against the oppression of the human spirit.
I recommend this very highly. I intend to spread the trilogy out over this year…read a few things while I let this settle, and then move on to the next two parts…because every good beginning needs an end…
