2008 – We Write Things Down So We Won’t Forget

cletusbigThe year 2008 was a great one for me in a lot of ways.  Sure, there are always ups and downs in life, but there were some significant ups in 2008, and I want to get them down here as a way of showing the universe my gratitude.

As a writer:

I received the 2007 Bram Stoker Award for Short Fiction and was nominated for my Collection, Defining Moments.  I was given the chance to write the afterword for an upcoming book by Clive Barker, “The Adventures of Mr. Maximillian Bacchus and His Traveling Circus” – after which Clive called me on the phone – not once, but twice – a friendship it appears will survive.

I saw publication of:

I Sold:

I Edited:

FIRST CUTS: A Tribute to Larry Roberts and Bloodletting Books – which made him smile.

As an IT Professional and blogger:

  • I started several new blogs, and then combined most of them into a single site here at DavidNiallWIlson.com
  • I saw my company through a major Facility Security Inspection.
  • I created the basis for the network that will branch our company out nationally over the next year.
  • I created TWEEPLEBLOG to profile the most important asset on the new social media site Twitter – the people.
  • I began spending more time blogging about what I’ve learned as an IT Professional and Web fanatic over the past couple of decades.
  • I helped people – even when I wasn’t paid.
  • I joined the team at Dad-o-Matic to help remind me to focus on my family, and to share that with others.

I’m going to do a companion piece to this later this afternoon or evening – things I hope to see, accomplish, and be in 2009.  For now, I’m content with the year that has passed.  My family is healthy, happy, and together.

You can read some thoughts on that in my first ever post today at Dad-o-Matic.

  • You also were/are a very friendly guy who gives fledgling writers such as myself hope to keep plugging away.
    Thank you.

  • Hey, I’m thankful to have reached a point where my advice and help is of use to other writers. I remember a time not all that long ago when I was the one in need of help – there were people there for me. (Refuses to write pay it forward because it’s too cliche)

  • It was indeed a great year for you. Congrats again on the success, may it continue for years to come.

And your advice is definately of use. I doubt very seriously if I would’ve gotten to the point where I am now without your help and friendship.

And on a side note… The Not Quite Right Reverend Cletus J. Diggs & The Currently Accepted Habits of Nature RAWKED!!!! Seriously, I just finished it a bit ago and it was fantastic. Excellent pacing, memorable characters and a creation (or recreation?) of environment so three dimensional, it almost had me checking for ticks as we left the swamp. This one has officially knocked Deep Blue from the top spot of my favorite books from you.

  • That means a lot man. That book started as something just funny and light and ended up being a lot more. I spent a lot of long morning runs thinking about what came next, studying the town (it’s lightly based on Hertford) and just – in general – working my way through what turned into a serious work.

You’re in no danger of losing friendship here. You were around through some of my worst times…

    Dave
